One of the greatest challenges that businesses face is earning and maintaining customer loyalty. With that loyalty comes an increase in opportunities for success because your customers are more likely to consistently spend money on your products/services, routinely patronize your business and even publicly vocalize their support for your business.

And while this is the dream for businesses, it can be a challenge to get there. Luckily, there are ways to take a casual customer who may purchase from your business during the occasional sale and turn them into a customer who places you at the top of their list for their most needed products.

What is Customer Loyalty?

Hubspot defines customer loyalty as, “a customer’s willingness to repeatedly return to a company to conduct business. This is typically due to the delightful and remarkable experiences they have with that brand.”

As described by Meltwater, there are a number of “moving parts to customer loyalty that work together to produce one common output: long-term fans who will continue to choose you over a competitor.”

Some of those moving parts include:

  • Patrons who act as advocates for your brand.
  • Customers consistently and proactively choosing your brand over others.
  • Building strong relationships with customers in order to encourage repeat purchases.

Ways to Earn Your Customers Trust

There are a number of things businesses can do to turn the casual customer into a loyal one.

Provide Quality Customer Service

Strong customer service is important for all businesses, as it shows respect for customers and their concerns. Business.com states that, “customers are loyal when they know they can turn to you for help with their questions or problems – and your products and services solve their needs.”

Whether you have a brick and mortar store or are an online business, there are ways to provide quality customer service. Consider setting up a customer service email address, live chat software or an area in your store for customers to visit when they have questions.

Establish Referral & Reward Programs

You are likely to have received a text or email from a business stating that for every friend you refer, you’ll receive a bonus (discount, free product, etc..) from the business. This is a referral program! Customers who refer friends and family to a business is a sign of trust and excitement.

Similar to a referral program is a rewards program – which offers rewards, discounts and other incentives after making routine purchases with a business. Both programs are used as ways to retain customers and reward them for their repeat patronage.

Continuously Provide Quality Products and Services

A main factor in customer loyalty is the fact that customers enjoy your products and services, which is why it’s crucial to maintain the quality of your products. Customers notice when products and services change for the worse, which can negatively affect their thoughts about your business and can lead to them moving on from your business. Consistency is key.
