Meta’s Plans to Launch Twitter-Esque Competitor

While Twitter continues to reign supreme as the leading microblogging site, Meta is rumored to be preparing their release of a Twitter-like competitor, currently codenamed “P92” or “Barcelona.” The app will allow users to do the following:

  • Post text updates up to 500 characters
  • Attach links, photos and (up to) 5 minute long videos
  • Engage with text posts via likes, replies and reports

According to TechCrunch the app will allow users to keep their Instagram verification and username, “all of their followers will receive a notification to follow them on the to-be-named platform.” P92 will be partially integrated within Instagram, but will function as a stand alone application.

For each individual account, users will have creator controls and account safety features including:

  • Two-step authentication
  • Ability to control replies and mentions
  • Instagram’s enforced community guidelines
  • Hidden words/blocked accounts from Instagram carried over to P92

Expected to be launched this summer, time will tell Twitter will gain a true competitor in P92.

TikTok Announces Effect Creator Rewards

In an effort to compensate creators for their work on the platform, TikTok recently announced the “Effect Creator Rewards,” a $6 million dollar fund offering “payments to creators based on the community’s engagement with their effects.” The fund works as follows: for every effect that is used in 500 thousand videos within 90 days of being published, that creator will receive $700 USD. For every 100 thousand videos published thereafter within the same 90 days, creators will also collect an additional $140. Prior to the announcement of the Effect Creators Rewards fund, TikTok creators monetized their work via brand sponsorships and commissions.

It is important to note that only one video per person/per day is eligible – so if a user creates multiple videos in 24 hours using your effect, only one video counts toward a potential payment.

Post GIFs as Response in Instagram Comments

While it is not widely used just yet, you may have noticed a GIF or two appear in the comments section of Instagram posts and reels. That’s due to a recent development from Instagram chief, Adam Mosseri, who recently announced that users can post GIF responses within Instagram comments, providing an alternative way to engage with your audience.

Initially made available to select users in a limited availability phase, the feature has now been released for global usage. GIF responses can be accessed by tapping on a new GIF button on the side of your comment typing box.
